I’ve played some excellent amateur golfers but none impressed me quite like
the old guy we played with over the Weekend here in Welland.
Soon after we started off, he hit a hole in one and while everyone else was
impressed. He didn’t seem overly excited about it. He remained as calm as a
cucumber. Almost like he was in some kind trance like “state”.
Assuming this was his first hole in one, we all congratulated him only to
find out later on that he had hit many holes in one in his time. “How did
he do it so often” was the question everyone was asking.
Simple - everyone else was trying to hit his or her golf ball into a small
hole and this old guy was shooting for an imaginary large size bucket?Let me
explain what this guy told us.. He always visualized the hole as being the
size of a bucket and having that kind of mindset made it possible for him to
get so many holes in one. Incredible I thought to myself. Maybe I should at
least try his unusual technique.
After hearing him explain how he does his visualization, I immediately used
the same secret technique next day. Unfortunately I didn’t get any holes in
one right away but my putting was improving. Every time I got on the green I
knew the ball was going to land just inside that huge hole, now I imagined
it being the size of a large bucket and of course, I could see it all
clearly in front of me.
It’s a fact that a good round of golf is more about how you visualize your
shot before actually taking a stroke. Sure you have to know how to hit a
ball correctly, (not to bend the wrist etc.,) and know basic stroke
fundamentals and all that. You also need to have a good stance and a steady
follow- through but those things can be taught, etc. Now if you can master
your mind’s eye, you will also master the game of golf and that’s why so
many people go back to the golf course week after week. They never seem to
quite master it though completely and there seems to be a new challenge
almost with every hole it seems.
I am still shooting for my first hole in one but in the meantime, my
handicap has come down ever so slightly except when I let my mind wander off
the course. It’s funny about the way we think and how it can have an
affect our game.
