Add power, accuracy to your golf game in a few short steps

The two major priorities of most golfers are more power and accuracy.

For optimal learning, these priorities must be addressed both academically and physically. Knowledge should be conveyed to the student through lecture, scientific demonstration, swing-training aids and video analysis. When done properly, players will come to fully understand their swings.

Power
There are four separate sources of power in the golf swing, definable and distinguishable:

1. Proper uncocking of the left wrist.
2. Blasting of the left arm off the chest with the body pivot.
3. Synchronized roll of the left wrist through impact.
4. The driving power of the right forearm.

When the player learns the proper utilization, application and synchronization of these power sources, he or she will solve the mysteries of power!


Accuracy
Two factors that determine the accuracy of all golf shots:
1. Control of the flat left wrist through impact, for clubface alignment.
2. Consistent orbit of the clubhead on the proper plane.

The player must learn to swing the clubhead, shaft and hands up and back then down and out on the same inclined plane time after time. He or she must also learn to control the clubface with the flat left wrist, thereby adding to the precision of all shots.

A Proper Golf Swing.

A proper golf swing obviously has an enormous impact on your game of golf. The golf swing has physics written all over it and is a great example of angular motion. The twisting swing produces torque on the club. This torque force changes the angular velocity of the club, causing rotation. Most club heads weigh about the same, so the key to being able to hit the long ball lies in the club head velocity. The faster your club head is going at the bottom of your swing, the greater the amount of kinetic energy that will be transferred from club head to the ball because the kinetic energy is proportional to the mass of the club head and the square of its velocity.
Professional golfers can generally achieve a club head speed of 100 M.P.H. at the bottom of their swing. Tiger Woods, however, can reach up to 125 M.P.H. According to research done by Raymond Penner, a physicist at Malaspina University-College in British Columbia, there is an optimum lie angle (angle between club shaft and club face) of a golf driver depending on the club head speed. For example, he found that a 7.5 degree lie angle will allow Tiger Woods to maximize his drive while golfers who swing slower would probably use a club with a lie angle closer to 20 degrees.
A typical way people try to hit a ball harder is to snap their wrists at the bottom of their swing.
Although this may feel like you are getting more power out of your swing, this action actually slows the club head down, according to Theodore Jorensen, a golf expert who has published works on the physics of golf.
So how can Tiger Woods, a man who is 6’1” and only 158 pounds, manage to have one of the longest drives amongst all professional golfers? The answer is that he is able to focus and conserve the energy in his swing through very careful and proper technique.
Here are 4 key elements of Tiger Woods’ swing:
1. At the back of his swing, Woods utilizes his flexibilty to reach far back, extending his range of motion while keeping his rotating torso directly over his right leg.
2. As he begins his swing, Woods builds up club head velocity by turning his torso quickly and pressing his right leg forward. Throughout his swing, Woods wastes little energy by maintaining his position above the ball.
3. Woods drives through the ball, using his hips, shoulders and wrists to concentrate his force and create a very high initial ball speed. Within 2 feet off the tee the ball is traveling at around 180 miles per hour - 20 mph faster than the average tour pro. Notice how he keeps his lead wrist perfectly straight.4. Woods allows the club head’s momentum to extend his follow-through far around his back, completing a long and smooth clubhead rotation.
