Old Dog New Tricks

Keep your head down!I teach golf for a living and it is a very complex motor skill. In giving a lesson, I am encouraging the student to move differently than they have previously moved. This undoubtedly would create different results and most of the time the initial results are not favourable. I have to convince the student that in the long run they are going to be a better golfer if they move this way. That is why it is sometimes easier to teach someone who has never played the game. People that have played before are trying to do the same thing they have always done and expect different results. (Isn’t that the definition of insanity)?

We are reluctant to try different things, explore different options because we are afraid of what might happen. We don’t like getting out of our comfort zone. Take the leap and really change the way you do things. Once you expand you will now know two ways of doing things and you will be much better off even if the initial results are not favourable.

When related to the golf swing, one of the most important factors is being aware of what you do versus what you think you are doing and your willingness to change your habits. The best way is with a qualified instructor and video equipment. If you swing slow, swing as fast as you can, if you think your head should stay down try and lift it, challenge all your beliefs about the swing and see if any of them matter.

I think you can teach old dogs new tricks but one thing is for sure, the dog has to be willing.
