Christmas ar The Whites

Christmas was a success at my house this year as it is every year with many young kids around. I have three young daughters. 8, 10, and 11 and two older children 28 and 30 and they both have two children which makes for a wonderful time. The young ones got their firetrucks and build a bears, laptops and MP3 players and the older ones got cash and gift certificates. The oldest of the young crew also got a cell phone which I don’t think she has put down since she opened the present.

I think they were spoiled a bit but I am very lucky and they are all wonderful children. The job of parenting is the most rewarding job, (if you can call it a job), in the whole world. I am truly blessed and as they grow and mature I look forward to playing a part in their lives. Life goes by so fast that sometimes we have to stop and take a look at what we have accomplished and I am proud of all my children.

Vijay Singh and Tiger Woods

Vijay Singh won another tournament on the weekend. I have the utmost respect for his game and he is a legend when it comes to working hard, hitting more balls on the practice range than anyone. The announcer made a comment hw Vijay was asked what he was going to do on Christmas Day and he said that he was going to hit balls. I think this is admirable but is it necessary. I guess it is okay as long as he is spending the right amount of time with his love ones.

Tiger Woods did no play in his own tournament, but was there to support the guys and to talk about his foundation and learning center. You can see that he is very proud of the contributions that he has made to the young people in Southern California.

Both of these players give back to the community as we see Vijay in commercials for St. Jude Hospital. I think this is what it is all about and if it is not about what we give back then can you imagine if at the end of it all they are asked about what they did with their life and they said that they became one of the best at hitting a ball into a hole in the ground in the least number of tries.

The Off Season

The off season or wintertime is a great time to assess your game and decide what you would like to improve in you golf game and how to go about doing it. It is also a great time to work on your fitness and health.

Looking at your game, determine what characteristics of it could be improved. Working indoors with your teacher on video is a great way to improve your swing. Do you need more distance, greater accuracy or better ball contact? These are some of the questions you should ask yourself and then talk to your coach about these things and he will put a program in place to help you get better.

Your fitness can improve greatly as well. Better stamina will help you towards the end of your round and more strength will help you hit the ball farther. Talk to a qualified golf fitness instructor that can design a program that you can do over the winter either in the gym or at home. The game as does life needs constant attention to details to make it better.

The Future

I had a discussion with a friend the other day and we were talking about the future and what our kids have to look forward to. I am a little concerned about just how far advanced our school systems are and if they are preparing them for the future. I think the teachers our wonderful but many of the older ones are afraid of new technology and are behind the times. We need to be on the cutting edge and preparing our children to be ready for the future.

He sent me a link to a video and ask me to watch it. It is amazing so I will let you watch it and I welcome any comments. The funny thing is I sent I it to the principal of my children’s school and she could not open it.

PGA Tour Qualifying

I watched the PGA Tour qualifying yesterday and the golf was great. The scores these guys are shooting are incredible. There were no Canadians that got their card although we had a few get their Nationwide Tour Cards. I am not sure if this is a reflection on the state of golf in Canada or just how many really good players there are out there. Some people will say that golf in Canada is not good because we don’t have many players on either tour but I think the powers to be like the R.C.G.A. and the C.P.G.A. are doing a wonderful job at looking to the future and trying to prepare our youth to compete on a global scale although we have to keep progressing. There is so much more that we can do.
