Tiger
Woods is a name well associated with golf. If you were to ask women
to name a golfer I am pretty sure most would say Tiger. Ask them to
name a women golf player and I believe they couldn't or would
hesitate to answer.
One
name I am aware of in women's golf is Annika Sorenstam. Annika was
born on Oct 9, 1970 in Stockholm, Sweden and at the age of 19,
attended the University of Arizona, earning several titles and
championships. She was granted full time membership into the LPGA in
February 1994.

Annika
topped the money list in 1995 having won several titles through the
late 90's and in 2002 she set or tied 20 LPGA records. She shot a 59
in Phoenix which no other women have ever shot so low at that time.
In 2003, she was the first woman to play in the men's Pro Golf
Tournament in 58 yrs. She went into this tournament to test herself
because she loves a challenge. Vijay Singh criticized her saying
“Sorenstam doesn't belong here with the men of the PGA tour.”
Needless to say she didn't make the cut but she should be proud of
what she achieved.
A well
established golfer with numerous awards to prove her status in the
world of golf, Annika's 38 tournament victories since 2000 are the
most of any golfer, man or woman at any level. That alone was quite
an accomplishment. Unfortunately for Women golfers, the LPGA doesn't
get the coverage or recognition that the men's PGA gets. Hopefully
with all that Annika has done for women's golf and the players she
has inspired, this will change.
